Six years ago moderate Republican Mark Kirk won this Senate seat by a point and a half over Alexi Giannoulias and the Democrats have had this election circled ever since. 2010 was an off-year and a Republican wave election, 2016 is a presidential election year and will not likely be as favorable for the Republicans but Kirk does have the advantage of incumbency.
This cycle he will face Iraq war veteran and two term congresswoman Tammy Duckworth. Both had primary challengers but both emerged with relative ease.
